FAQ

Do I need to preregister for classes?
Some classes are preregistered and some welcome you to drop in anytime. It is best to check the online schedule, and if you have any uncertainties, call or email us.
I am a complete beginner, is that okay?
Absolutely. All of our teachers are able to work with beginners. Some of our classes are designated for beginners too.
What do I wear?
Comfortable, easy to move in, layered clothing is best. Some classes require non marking indoor shoes only.
Do I need to bring anything with me?
We have a fully stocked studio with all the equipment and support necessary for the many classes we offer here. Of course it is a good idea to bring a water bottle. You can fill it here if you need to.
I have an injury or chronic condition, will that cause any problems?
All of our teachers are able to modify and adjust the class to suit individual needs.
It is always a good idea to check with your physician to make sure the class you would like to take is suitable for you.
We are also available for private consultations and sessions, to create a practice that is perfect for you!
How often should I come to Yoga by the Sea?
Well, we have so many different types of classes, you could come a few times a week for various activities. Once a week is a great place to start, and increase it as your schedule allows.
I am really curious, but feel a bit self conscious, what should I do?
We offer smaller classes, usually 8-10 people, so that each student can receive individualization attention from the teacher.
We are also available for private consultations and sessions, to help integrate you into a ongoing class, or to create a practice that is perfect for you!
Can I do Yoga even if I am not flexible?
Yes! You are a perfect candidate for yoga. Many people think that they need to be flexible to begin yoga, but that's a little bit like thinking that you need to be able to play tennis in order to take tennis lessons. Come as you are and you will find that yoga practice will help you become more flexible. This newfound agility will be balanced by strength, coordination, and enhanced cardiovascular health, as well as a sense of physical confidence and overall well-being.
What if I am out of shape?
It's best to start somewhere, and do what you can do. Your strength, stamina, energy level, focus, coordination, lung capacity and balance will increase as you practice over time.
I see that there are so many styles of Yoga out there. How do I know which style is most beneficial to me?
Any one of them will help you. The best thing to do is sample classes of few different styles and go with the teacher you like the best. The teacher is more important than the style. Find a time and class that suits your schedule. The important thing is to get started.
Will Yoga help me lose weight?
Yoga can make you look and feel better, regardless of your weight. That said, Yoga can help you slim down in a couple of ways. First, the exercises will help you burn calories. In addition, they'll help tone your muscles and improve of your posture. Yoga is also about healthy living, which includes a healthy diet. That doesn't mean you have to become a vegetarian, just that you should be conscious of the foods you eat, sticking with natural, fresh fruits and vegetables, grains, etc. as much as possible while limiting your intake of junk food and foods high in fat, like red meat. Any of the basic hatha styles will help. The important thing is to practice daily (or at least 4-5 days a week). If possible, try and find a teacher. Books, videos and websites can be a great help, but nothing beats a live instructor.
