Tai Chi with Laurie and Brock O'Bryne

Tai Chi Chuan is an internal martial art that integrates all elements of fitness, by promoting balance, flexibility, strength, endurance posture, and the breath.

Tai Chi is considered one of the most advanced forms of martial arts, since it does not depend on our physical strength, size, or technique, but on our ability to be in a totally present, relaxed, yet aware, state in which the life force or chi flows unobstructed throughout the body, mind, and heart (emotions). In this way we are able to meet, join and direct whatever energy comes our way.

Tai Chi cultivates awareness and calmness of mind and physical capability of body that produces great benefits in our everyday life.

Gurdjieff Movements Introduction with Alison Davies

George Gurdjieff, a "remarkable" man who dedicated the better part of his life to the awakening of humanity, wished in the end to be known and remembered as a "teacher of dance." Within the context of a comprehensive body of work, the sacred movements or dances were developed by Gurdjieff as an intensive, integral practice for liberating our vitality and intelligence and as means of experiencing and transmitting eternal and essential truth.

The movements were designed to help students gain a greater awareness of automatic habits of body, heart and mind while simultaneously cultivating a greater capacity to experience and express life more fully; that is to sense, feel and see what is real.

This class will give participants the opportunity to learn some of the movements and "obligatories" in company with others, which is how they were intended to be learned.

Bio: Alison Davies is a resident of Roberts Creek and has been studying Gurdjieff Movements for 10 years. Her hope is to develop an ongoing practicing group for Gurdjieff movements based in the Creek. For further information about the movements, please visit: www.lifelinesfacilitators.ca/here/SACRED_MOVEMENTS.html

The Evolution of the Swiss Ball

Dr. Susanne Klein-Vogelbach introduced the gymnastics ball in Switzerland in 1909. She is generally credited with the introduction of the ball into the physical therapy circles to treat orthopedic and neurological disorders. Since then the Swiss Balls have evolved rapidly among athletes, general exercisers, chiropractors, physiotherapists and even doctors are now recommending them. You have probably seen them on television, in your gym or used them during your recovery from an injury with help from your physiotherapist.

Why Train on the Swiss Ball?

  • Functional carry over to real life
  • Recruitment of stabilizers
  • Improves motor control, nervous system function, balance, core stabilization, joint stability, co-ordination and posture
  • Development of strength through full range of motion enhances spinal stabilization
  • Develops subconscious "muscle memory" to postural muscles
  • It's fun, brings you back to your childhood, motivating, challenging and takes you to a new level of conditioning
  • Adaptable to all ages and levels of fitness
  • Helps to prevent musculoskeletal injuries

What is Trunk Stabilization?

Muscles work to hold the joints in proper position. This decreases stress to ligaments, intervertebral discs and joint structure. The ball optimizes response to musculature. The lower abdominals, external obliques (lateral fibres), back extensors and gluteal musculature are responsible for attaining proper spinal alignment and pelvic stability.

What is the functional carry over from training on the Swiss Ball as opposed to machine strength training?

The ball prepares the body for practical and specific stresses of life. Functional movement is the ability of the body to meet every day needs and challenges of the individual: having enough muscle strength and endurance to correctly lift strenuous loads, play with children, carry groceries, garden, play sports and enjoy recreational pursuits — real life every day activities. Machine training (although it has its benefits) does not train the body in a functional manner. There is very low carry over to sport and every day activity. Swiss ball training however allows one to train for REAL LIFE and challenges the nervous system to respond in every day situations.
